1. Casual tie.

There is an in-between time when a tie is necessary, but looking formal isn’t.

Let’s say you’re going out on a date.  Naturally you want to impress her, so for this instance, you want to wear a tie.  What kind of tie?  Nothing that screams corporate.  No, now’s not the time for a sober silk neat twill.  So you reach for a rich, soft wool.  Perfect.

But what about the rest of your outfit?  Save the worsted wool suit for work, and pair that tie with analogous pieces, like a cotton traveller’s jacket or flannel wool sport coat with patch pockets.  And instead of your sharp creased power trousers, perhaps you reach for something less formal; say something in a cotton herringbone or wool tweed.  And shoes?  Boots or loafers.

In such circumstances, think casual refinement, sophisticated ease, relaxed elegance.  And why?  Because these are the occasions when the rules must be followed, yet adapted to your surroundings.

Just…try not to look like the schlub in the pics here.  See how he’s got his hands in his pockets?  Can’t trust a guy who does that.
